A Long Island, New York college student’s wheelchair accessible van was destroyed last weekend in a fiery accident in the family’s driveway.

Danny Ferencsik, a student at Farmingdale State College, was born with spinal muscular atrophy. He commuted to school each day in a wheelchair accessible van with his mother, Fios1 News reports. But on the morning of September 18 an allegedly drunk neighbor slammed into the van parked in the Ferencsik’s driveway. The van went up in flames.

According to police, 27-year-old Avinasha Mahadeo, Ferencsik’s neighbor, was driving the vehicle that slammed into the van. He was intoxicated. Mahadeo was arrested and later released on $5,000 bail.

Ferencsik’s commute to classes used to take about a half hour in the van but now takes about three hours on a community bus, according to Fios1. His mother said the family is grateful that the Suffolk County bus is available but using the bus more than triples her son’s commuting time. The Ferencsiks say that replacing the $65,000 van will be a burden.
