Parents, check your baby’s crib…it could be a death trap. If you have a Simplicity drop side one, immediately stop using it. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled all Simplicity drop side cribs including some with the Graco logo and Winnie-the-Pooh motif.
Eleven deaths are now attributed to Simplicity cribs. The CPSC said the most recent one occurred this past September when a 7-month-old child from Princeton, Kentucky became entrapped in the crib when a part of it broke.
The main issue with these cribs is the plastic hardware on them, which can break or deform, detaching the drop side. When this occurs, there is a space between the drop side and mattress. Children can roll into that space, become entrapped, and suffocate. There have been at least 25 other reported incidents regarding a drop side detaching from the crib.
Recalls were previously issued in December 2005, June 2007, September 2007, September 2008, and July 2009. With a history like that, one would think these dangerous cribs would have been yanked before now.
