Another Pennsylvania Lawsuit Claims Marcellus Shale Gas Drilling Contaminated Water

A Bradford County, Pennsylvania woman is blaming a natural gas driller for contaminating her ground water well and making her sick.  She has filed suit against Chesapeake Appalachia, LLP,  a firm with hydraulic fracturing operations throughout the Marcellus shale, as well as Chesapeake Energy Corporation and Nomac Drilling LLC .

According to Judy Armstrong’s lawsuit, Chesapeake began drilling several wells near her fiancé’s property in Sugar Run, where she lives, last year.  She has since suffered from contact dermatitis, gastro-intestinal discomfort, barium poisoning, pain, numbness to her face and hands, deformities of the bones of her hands, and headache, among other injuries. Greenpeace Disputes Government Claims on BP Oil Spill

The oil is not gone.  That’s what Greenpeace scientists who just finished an expedition in the Gulf of Mexico have to say about government claims that most of oil from the BP spill has evaporated, dissipated, been dispersed or been burned and skimmed.

The 3-months aboard the vessel Arctic Sunrise was spent looking for oil and marine life in trouble as a result of the BP disaster. Greenpeace is working with scientists from over a dozen institutions and the Gulf Restoration Network to try and get a better understanding of the true impacts of BP’s oil spill. [Read more...]

Teens Texting While Driving, Study Finds

A recent study finds that teen cell phone use, including texting, is way up.  In fact, according to the Pew Research Foundation, the frequency of use of texting among all teens has now overtaken the frequency of every other common form of interaction with their friends.

That probably won’t surprise many parents of teens.  But what might are the study’s finding on cell phone use and driving.  According to Pew Research Foundation, more than a third of teens admitted that they have sent a text message while driving.  Boys and girls are equally likely to report texting behind the wheel as well as riding with texting drivers. Feds Eye Avandia, Issue Glaxo a Subpoena

Looks like GlaxoSmithKline has another Avandia headache on its hands – in the form of a Justice Department subpoena.  According to the drugmaker’s third quarter earnings report, the feds are looking into the marketing and development of the controversial diabetes drug.  No word yet though on whether that investigation is criminal or civil in nature.

Some states attorneys general are also asking similar Avandia questions, and Glaxo said consumers are continuing to file lawsuits over the drug. [Read more...]

FDA Says Prilosec – Plavix Still A Dangerous Combo

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is worried that doctors might make the wrong decision when it comes to choosing a heartburn drug for people taking the anti-blood clotting medication, Plavix.

Over the past couple years, a series of studies have indicated that Prilosec, a proton pump inhibitor,  might make it difficult to metabolize the active ingredient in Plavix.  That could make Plavix less effective in preventing blood clots.  The FDA issued a warning on the possible problems with Plavix-Prilosec interactions last November, and advised people taking Plavix to avoid Prilosec.
